The Laken Riley Act (SB5) mandates the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to detain non-U.S. nationals unlawfully present or lacking proper documentation who are charged with, arrested for, convicted of, or admit to burglary, theft, larceny, or shoplifting. It also empowers states to sue the federal government for immigration enforcement decisions or alleged failures that harm the state or its residents.
